Germany started off as the main problem for the Allied forces. The war between Germany and the Allies was no longer the main issue. The Allies had a bigger problem to worry about, Japan. The Allied forces needed to win the war in the Pacific, so World War II could finally come to an end. The Allies weren't sure yet how they were going to defeat Japan exactly.
The United States had the decision in their hands to end the war with one single weapon. The Japanese military showed unconditional strength, not because they were unbeatable, but for what they did. In the Battle of Okinawa, Japan was ashamed of their defeat. They did not want to admit that they had lost the battle. Instead of owning up to their defeat, the Japs started committing suicide. This battle had the most casualties. This showed the US and the other Allied forces that they would not take defeat and it will take a lot to surrender.
President Truman had to pick one of two decisions to end the war. The first decision was to send the US military to invade the mainland of Japan. If Truman chose this decision many American lives would be lost. The second decision was the atomic bombs, the most destructible and terrible weapon ever created. Truman had to look at what was best. The United states, civilians and soldiers, were all tired from four years of war. The biggest decision of President Truman's life was made. Japan was going to be hit with the atomic bombs.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the targets for the atomic bomb droppings. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were picked because they were cities that have never been touched by bombs. The United States also wanted to destroy the military. Hiroshima contained military facilities and Nagasaki was important to the Japanese Military. These two cities were perfect for the atomic bombs and would cause mass destruction.
The first bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" was flown on a plane called Enola Gay. It was dropped on August 6th, 1945. About 70,000 people were perished instantly and about 100,000 people died from burns and radiation sickness. After this bomb, the Allies asked for Japans surrender, but they refused. The second atomic bomb was dropped on August 9th, 1945.This bomb was nicknamed "Fat Man" and was dropped on Nagasaki. Japan finally chose to surrender. Two weeks later,September 2nd, 1945 the ceremonies of Japan's surrender took place on the USS Missouri battle ship. Japan agreed to the Allie's terms and signed their surrender.
